U.S. President Donald Trump announced that Iran is involved in negotiations to secure a ceasefire and hostage release deal between Israel and Hamas in Gaza.
Speaking at a White House event, Trump said, “Gaza is in the midst of massive negotiations between us, Hamas, Israel, and Iran is involved. We want to get the hostages back”.
The U.S. has proposed a 60-day ceasefire, under which 28 Israeli hostages, alive and dead, would be released in the first week, in exchange for 1,236 Palestinian prisoners and the remains of 180 Palestinians, per Reuters. Israel has agreed to the terms, but Hamas has rejected the plan, demanding a permanent end to the conflict, according to Egyptian sources. The White House and Iran’s UN mission did not clarify Iran’s role, leaving Trump’s claim unverified.

Negotiations, mediated by Egypt, Qatar, and U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, have stalled since a March 2025 ceasefire collapsed. Israel’s reoccupation of parts of Gaza and a blockade on aid, condemned by Médecins Sans Frontières as “outrageous,” have heightened tensions. Hamas holds 59 hostages, with 24 believed alive, including one U.S. citizen, Edan Alexander.

Trump’s assertion of Iran’s involvement, echoed on social media, coincides with separate U.S.-Iran nuclear talks in Rome. Analysts like Jonathan Panikoff suggest Iran’s weakened “Axis of Resistance” may push it toward mediation, but no evidence confirms its direct role in Gaza talks. Israel’s “Gideon’s Chariots” plan to reoccupy Gaza if no deal is reached by May 15 adds urgency.
The claim raises questions, as Iran-backed Hamas has historically resisted U.S. mediation.
