President Donald Trump has launched a severe verbal attack on Democratic lawmakers, labeling them “traitors” and suggesting they should face execution. The outburst came in response to a video released by six Democratic members of Congress who previously served in the military or intelligence agencies.
In a post on his Truth Social platform, the Republican president reposted an article about the video with the comment, “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, punishable by DEATH!” In an earlier post, he described their actions as “really bad, and Dangerous to our Country,” adding, “SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???”
The controversy stems from a video released by a group of Democratic lawmakers with national security backgrounds. The group includes Senator Elissa Slotkin, a former CIA analyst and Iraq war veteran, Senator Mark Kelly, a former astronaut and Navy veteran, and several House representatives with similar service records.
In their message, the lawmakers directly addressed members of the U.S. military and intelligence community. They expressed concern that the Trump administration was positioning these institutions against the American people and undermining constitutional principles. “We know you are under enormous stress and pressure right now,” they stated, before reminding service members, “Our laws are clear: You can refuse illegal orders.” The video concluded with an appeal to “stand up for our laws, our Constitution.”
The lawmakers’ video did not reference any specific incident or scenario. However, some Democrats in Congress have previously criticized the legality and transparency of Trump’s military strikes against suspected drug traffickers and expressed concerns about a potential attack on Venezuela.
In response to Trump’s comments, Senator Chris Coons, a top Democrat on the Senate Defense Appropriations Subcommittee, issued a strong rebuke. “Calling for the execution of senators and members of Congress for reminding our troops of that is chilling behavior we should expect from authoritarians… not the president of the United States,” he stated, urging his Republican colleagues to condemn the remarks.
This incident continues a pattern of rhetoric from Trump, who has occasionally called for the jailing of political opponents since returning to office. His Justice Department has initiated investigations into some of these individuals.
