Speculation over Travis Kelce’s future has intensified after the Kansas City Chiefs ended a frustrating 2025 season with a narrow 14–12 loss to the Las Vegas Raiders.
At 36, Kelce faces another offseason of uncertainty. The veteran tight end admitted after the Week 18 defeat that he has not decided whether he will return next season or step away from the game. Unlike last year, when his decision came quickly, this time his tone suggested hesitation.
Despite the uncertainty, one voice inside the Chiefs locker room remains confident. Defensive tackle Chris Jones, a longtime teammate and close friend, rejected the idea that Kelce’s career is over.
“I’m not buying it. He’ll be back next year,” Jones told reporters after the game in Las Vegas. When asked for certainty, he stopped short of guarantees but reaffirmed his belief. “This was a tough year for us. I still have faith in my guy coming back,” he said.
A partnership built on championships
Jones’ confidence stems from nearly a decade of shared success. The two have been teammates since Kansas City drafted Jones in the second round of the 2016 NFL Draft. Together, they became cornerstones of one of the most dominant eras in franchise history.
Kelce and Jones played key roles in three Super Bowl championships, anchoring a team that consistently competed for titles. That shared history makes the current moment more emotional, especially after a season that failed to meet expectations.

Against the Raiders, Kelce recorded just three catches for 12 yards. The quiet performance contrasted sharply with his past postseason heroics. Even so, he added to his legacy.
Kelce became the 23rd player and only the third tight end in NFL history to surpass 13,000 career receiving yards. He also moved past Terrell Owens into eighth place on the league’s all-time receptions list.
What comes next for Kelce
Those milestones did little to quiet questions about the future. If Kelce returns, the outlook could change quickly. Patrick Mahomes is expected to recover from a torn ACL, giving Kansas City a chance to reset and pursue another playoff run.
Ending his career after an injury-hit season would feel uncharacteristic for a player known for delivering on the biggest stages. If he retires, Kelce will leave as one of the greatest tight ends in NFL history, with his résumé already secure.

Off the field, his high-profile relationship with Taylor Swift has added further intrigue. Some fans see her recent public comments as hints toward a life beyond football, though neither has addressed the speculation directly.
For now, belief inside the locker room and debate outside it continue to collide. Whether Jones’ confidence proves correct or Kelce chooses to walk away, his legacy remains unquestioned. The only unanswered question is whether his story includes one final chapter.
