A shooting at Apalachee High School in Winder, Georgia, resulted in at least four fatalities on Wednesday. The Barrow County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that they had detained one suspect.
Referencing briefings from unnamed law enforcement sources reported that numerous individuals sustained injuries during the incident, not all from gunfire; some were hurt in the ensuing chaos as they attempted to escape.
According to a spokesperson from Barrow County Schools, the situation was under control by midday, and students began to leave the campus.
Television footage captured several ambulances at the scene and observed a patient being airlifted from the school grounds.
“The initial call came in at 10:23 am, prompting responses from various law enforcement and Fire/EMS teams to the reported active shooting at the high school,” stated the Sheriff’s Office.
Jenna Sellitto, a spokeswoman for the FBI in Atlanta, announced that agents were dispatched to assist local authorities at the high school.
The White House released a statement indicating that President Joe Biden is aware of the incident and his administration will maintain coordination with federal, state, and local agencies as further details emerge.
