TOTO, a leading Japanese toilet company, launched a new app in August 2025 that helps people find public restrooms and check wait times using QR codes. This innovative tool allows users, particularly women, to avoid long lines at busy train stations. The app significantly enhances access to restrooms across Japan.
The app connects to restroom management systems. Users can scan a QR code with their phone to view nearby restroom locations and live wait times, which are indicated as either “busy” or “empty.”
Inside restroom stalls, another QR code lets users report issues. For instance, they can note a broken flush or a dirty stall. TOTO’s Tasuku Miyazaki told AFP, “Users can report problems easily.” As a result, staff fix issues faster.

The app supports English, Chinese, and Korean languages. This helps tourists visiting Japan. For example, it supports travellers at events like the 2025 Osaka Expo. Consequently, everyone can use restrooms without stress.
Japan has a problem with restroom lines, especially for women. A 2024 study found 60% of women wait over five minutes. TOTO’s app shows less crowded restrooms. Additionally, Japan’s government plans to add more women’s stalls. They will use digital signs and movable walls in 2026.
The app also helps staff. It alerts them if a stall is dirty or used for too long. This keeps restrooms clean and ready. TOTO, known for fancy toilets with water sprays and music, made this system reliable.
This app makes public restrooms easier to find and use. It saves time in busy places like stations or malls. Moreover, it could inspire other countries to improve their restrooms. Japan’s smart approach leads the way.
