The Simpsons has stirred online discussion after referencing Luigi Mangione in a line of dialogue during a recent episode from its thirty-seventh season.
The long-running animated series, which airs on Fox, has been renewed through at least season 40. It featured an episode in which Homer Simpson becomes a stunt double for Bumblebee Man. The instalment paid tribute to the show’s Latin American legacy. It included appearances by Los Tigres del Norte and Humberto Vélez, the longtime Spanish-language voice of Homer.
In the episode, Bart Simpson grows excited after learning that his father is working alongside Bumblebee Man. He looks forward to sharing the news at school. Homer quickly tempers that excitement, explaining that he has signed a non-disclosure agreement. Thus, he cannot discuss the job publicly.

Bart then delivers a line that has since circulated widely on social media: “What’s the use of having a bada** in the family if you can’t brag about them? Now I know how the Mangiones feel.” The remark alludes to Luigi Mangione. He has been linked in media reports to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
As of publication, the show’s creative team has not commented on the reference. Short clips of the scene, however, have gained traction across social platforms. Viewers are surprised by the inclusion of a joke tied to a recent and sensitive real-world case.
Controversy has been a recurring element throughout the show’s history. Over several decades on air, The Simpsons has faced scrutiny for various storylines and cultural references. These include a Michael Jackson cameo, episodes banned in certain countries, such as “Thirty Minutes Over Tokyo” and “Blame It on Lisa,” and darker narratives like the Frank Grimes storyline.
The series has also edited or censored content in syndication and on streaming platforms. It remains unclear whether the Mangione reference will remain unchanged in future broadcasts or on Disney+.
Despite periodic backlash, The Simpsons continues to expand its universe. The show is moving ahead with new episodes. Additionally, an upcoming sequel, The Simpsons Movie 2, is scheduled for release on September 3, 2027.
