The Simpsons has delivered its first emotional moment of 2026 with the official retirement of one of its most recognisable recurring characters, Barry Duffman.
The long-running animated series confirmed Duffman’s exit in a Severance-themed episode that aired on Sunday, January 4. The episode marked the end of an era for a character who had been part of the show for nearly three decades.
In the parody episode titled Seperance, the Duff Beer spokesperson announced that his role as the company mascot had come to an end. He explained that the Duff Corporation had permanently retired the character, citing changing advertising trends and the declining relevance of traditional brand mascots.

During the episode, viewers briefly saw Duffman without his iconic red uniform. That moment reinforced the finality of his departure and underscored the shift away from classic corporate advertising within the show’s satirical world.
Barry Duffman first appeared in 1997 in the episode The City of New York vs. Homer Simpson. He quickly became a fan favourite and a recurring symbol of the show’s sharp critique of marketing culture and consumerism.
His retirement follows another recent farewell. Less than two months earlier, the series also wrote out Alice Glick, the First Church organist who had appeared on the show for more than 34 years.
With these back-to-back departures, The Simpsons continues to evolve while acknowledging the legacy of characters that helped define its long and influential run.
