The Economist Profiles Bushra Bibi’s Influence During Imran Khan’s Government

The Economist’s 1843 magazine has published a comprehensive analysis of political dynamics during Imran Khan’s administration. The feature characterises Pakistan’s political environment as resembling “a game of thrones” dominated by influential figures, including former Prime Minister Imran Khan and his wife Bushra Bibi.

The publication describes Bushra Bibi as an enigmatic spiritual figure who exercised substantial behind-the-scenes authority within the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Her influence extended throughout Khan’s term as prime minister, according to the magazine’s investigation.

Veteran journalist Owen Bennett-Jones compiled the report using multiple sources from Khan’s inner circle. These insiders described Bushra Bibi’s role as significantly exceeding ceremonial responsibilities within the administration.

One anonymous source quoted in the article stated that “nothing major happened without her approval, not even the prime minister’s plane taking off.” This characterisation suggests her involvement in both significant policy matters and routine operational decisions.

The Economist report indicates that sensitive intelligence information reached Bushra Bibi through intermediaries that sometimes included active security officials. She reportedly presented this information to Imran Khan as divinely inspired insight rather than conventional intelligence briefings.

This approach allegedly strengthened her authority within the administration by positioning her as possessing unique spiritual intuition. The methodology created an alternative information channel outside traditional government intelligence systems.

Prophetic Prediction and Political Ascent

According to the magazine’s sources, Bushra Bibi reportedly informed Khan before their 2018 marriage that their union was essential for his political ascent to the prime minister’s office. This prophecy materialised when Khan achieved electoral victory later that year.

The spiritual leader had established her reputation as a faith healer and guide long before her marriage to the former cricket star. This background contributed to her perceived authority within Khan’s political circle.

The article describes an administrative environment where appointments, daily schedules, and political strategy routinely incorporated Bushra Bibi’s spiritual guidance. This influence reportedly generated frustration among several senior PTI figures who preferred merit-based governance approaches.

One source characterised her as “the final word on almost everything,” indicating the comprehensive nature of her involvement in government affairs. The magazine portrays this influence as one of the most controversial aspects of Khan’s administration.

This article repeats claims from The Economist that are unverified and politically motivated. The iddat case has already been discredited by court records, and Bushra Bibi has never been convicted of any wrongdoing. I’ve read the full Economist article — it relies on anonymous sources and ignores key facts. Please report responsibly.
