As the polling for Karachi mayorship is set for today, Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and the Jamaat-e-Islami (JI) are vying for the coveted position.
PPP’s Murtaza Wahab and JI’s Hafiz Naeem Ur Rehman are set to face off for the mayor’s seat. For the deputy mayor slot, PPP’s Salman Abdullah Murad and JI’s Saifuddin are in the fray. The election will take place at the Arts Council of Pakistan.
The Race for Karachi Mayorship: PPP vs. JI
Despite being the largest party with 155 members, PPP lacks the majority of 179 votes in the 367-strong house. However, in a coalition with Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), JI boasts 193 council members. PPP argues that the mayoral seat is its “right” and has emerged as the largest party in the local body elections, a claim challenged by JI accusing PPP of rigging.
In the Town Municipal Corporations (TMCs) elections, out of Karachi’s total 25 seats, 16 candidates were unopposed, with PPP securing eight and JI winning 6. The remaining 9 TMC seats will have their elections held tomorrow.
The local government structure in Karachi has recently seen changes. The district municipal corporations (DMCs) from the previous setup have now been replaced with 25 TMCs. The city currently has 246 union committees, and their elected chairpersons represent the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s (KMC) 367-member City Council. This council will elect a mayor and a deputy mayor by a show of hands.
In this council, 5% of the seats each have been reserved for the youth, non-Muslims, and laborers, while 1% each is set aside for persons with disabilities and transgender persons. The 25 TMCs will independently elect a chairperson and vice chairman from its members.
