At Tesla’s ‘We, Robot’ event in California, the Optimus robot made an impressive debut, demonstrating its versatility by walking the runway and serving drinks to attendees. Described by Tesla as a humanoid “friend,” Optimus can perform an extensive array of tasks, including taking selfies, engaging in conversation, dancing, and serving.
Tesla CEO Elon Musk introduced Optimus as a multifunctional robot. “It will basically do anything you want. It can teach, babysit, walk your dog, mow your lawn, shop for groceries, or just be your friend,” Musk explained. He emphasized the robot’s potential to revolutionize daily tasks, noting, “Whatever you can think of, it will do, and it’s going to be awesome.”
During a demonstration video at the event, Optimus handled various household chores such as picking up packages, watering plants, cleaning kitchen surfaces, unloading groceries, and interacting with children.
Musk encouraged attendees to interact with the robots, adding, “You will be able to walk right up to them, and they will serve drinks at the bar. It’s a wild experience to have humanoid robots right in front of you.”
According to Musk, the projected long-term cost for Optimus is between $20,000 and $30,000.
The event and Optimus’s capabilities have captivated the internet. On the social platform X, a user posted a video of Optimus greeting attendees, sparking discussions about the experience. “Didn’t it feel like you were on a time travel trip? This event made history for sure,” one user commented. While many were impressed, some were sceptical about Optimus’s autonomy.
