Elon Musk has unveiled key details about Tesla’s secretive in-house AI chip development. He announced that the company has built and deployed millions of its own AI processors, establishing a significant technological lead.
In a series of posts on X, Musk explained that a dedicated Tesla team has worked on this technology for years. These custom chips are the foundation for the company’s real-world artificial intelligence applications.
Musk provided a clear look at Tesla’s aggressive development timeline. He confirmed the current generation in Tesla vehicles is the ‘AI4’ chip. The next generation, ‘AI5,’ is nearly complete. Furthermore, development of the ‘AI6’ chip has already begun.
Most people don’t know that Tesla has had an advanced AI chip and board engineering team for many years.
That team has already designed and deployed several million AI chips in our cars and data centers. These chips are what enable Tesla to be the leader in real-world AI.

The company plans an ambitious production goal. Tesla aims to launch a new AI chip design into volume production every 12 months. Musk boldly claimed this cadence would surpass the combined production volume of all other AI chip manufacturers globally.
According to Musk, these chips will have a profound societal benefit. They are critical for achieving full self-driving, which he believes will “save millions of lives” through safer roads. The technology also powers the Tesla Optimus humanoid robot. This robot aims to provide advanced medical care and other services in the future.
FWIW, I’m deeply involved in the chip design and meet with the engineering team every Tuesday and Saturday.
The Saturday meetings are short-term and will no longer be needed in a few months when AI5 is taped out.

Musk ended his announcement with a direct call for top engineering talent. He invited exceptional AI chip designers to apply by email.
Applicants must provide evidence of their skills, particularly in applying AI to chip design. Musk also emphasised his personal involvement, holding weekly meetings with the engineering team to fast-track development.
