In a fresh assault on law enforcement in Pakistan, a checkpost in the Sherani District of Balochistan came under a surprise attack on Sunday, leading to the tragic martyrdom of four security personnel.
The police officials stated that unidentified gunmen initiated the attack, which resulted in the loss of lives. They further reported that one attacker met his end during the counter-fire, and in the aftermath of the incident, a thorough search operation was instigated within the area.
Balochistan’s Chief Minister, Abdul Qudus Bizenjo, strongly condemned this distressing incident. He declared, “Terrorists cannot demoralise security forces with cowardly acts,” affirming that the sacrifices made by the forces stand as a beacon for the entire nation. He lauded the determination and courage with which the security forces ensure national security.
A Wave of Terror Attacks: National Security Committee Response
This event marks the latest in a series of attacks plaguing law enforcement agencies in the country over the past few months. An episode from the previous day saw a grenade attack on the Smart Police Station Civil Lines Quetta, injuring at least one police officer. The attacker managed to escape post the incident.
Even the major urban centres, such as Karachi and Peshawar, have not been spared from the wave of terror. Militants seem to target security forces, disrupting the nation’s peace primarily. In response to the increasing incidents, the National Security Committee (NSC) convened a meeting in April to decide on initiating a comprehensive operation against these militant outfits to eliminate the threat of terrorism.
The context for this meeting was the terrorist attack on Peshawar Police Lines on January 2, 2023, which led to the loss of over 80 lives, predominantly law enforcers. Security forces have since been conducting operations against terrorists with an unwavering resolve to eliminate terrorism and reinforce the sacrifices of their soldiers.
Meanwhile, the Pakistan Institute of Peace Studies (PIPS), an Islamabad-based think tank, disclosed that there has been a 27% rise in terrorist attacks in the country compared to 2021, with at least 419 people killed and 734 injured in 262 terrorist attacks last year.
