Chinese tech giant Tencent Holdings marked a significant step into the console gaming market with the unveiling of ‘Last Sentinel,’ a high-budget console game.
The reveal, which included a trailer, took place at The Game Awards in Los Angeles. ‘Last Sentinel’ represents Tencent’s ambitious move beyond its renowned mobile gaming sector.
The action role-playing game ‘Last Sentinel’ is under development by about 200 personnel at Tencent’s Lightspeed LA game studio, a crucial part of the company’s global expansion strategy. Although the launch date remains undisclosed, ‘Last Sentinel’ will immerse players in battles against robots in a dystopian Japanese setting.
Tencent has historically excelled in mobile gaming, with hits like PUBG Mobile. However, it is now shifting its focus to cater to evolving consumer preferences and expanding its international presence. This strategic move into console games was reinforced in 2020 by hiring industry veteran Steve Martin, known for his work on blockbuster titles like Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption.
In addition to showcasing its in-house development capabilities with ‘Last Sentinel,’ Tencent has been actively acquiring stakes in major global game developers. This includes a 30% stake in Larian Studios, known for creating Baldur’s Gate 3. This approach indicates Tencent’s commitment to diversifying its gaming portfolio and strengthening its position in the global gaming industry.
