Tania Aidrus, a former Google executive, joined Pakistan’s Digital Pakistan initiative approximately four years after her resignation due to issues related to her dual citizenship in Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) govt tenure.
Aidrus, renowned for her contributions to developing prominent apps and platforms, has rejoined the project as the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) government intensifies its efforts toward digital transformation by forming a high-level committee under her leadership.
The IT and Telecom Ministry announced that Aidrus had been appointed convener of the Digital Pakistan committee. The committee, chaired by the federal state minister for IT, compiles recommendations to enhance the country’s digital infrastructure. The goal is to improve transparency and efficiency within government processes, reflecting a significant push towards modernizing Pakistan’s governance through technology.
During Imran Khan’s administration, Aidrus spearheaded efforts to transform Pakistan into a digitally empowered society. She holds an MBA from MIT Sloan School of Management and a bachelor’s degree from Brandeis University. With over 15 years of experience in the technology sector, Aidrus has strongly advocated for the internet’s transformative power to eliminate information barriers and foster economic growth.
At Google, she led product management and payment solutions within the Next Billion Users (NBU) division, focusing on assisting developing countries in shifting from cash to digital payments. Additionally, Aidrus held the position of Google’s Country Manager for South Asia Emerging Markets, managing operations across Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka from Google’s Singapore headquarters.
In 2017, Aidrus co-founded ClickDiagnostics, an innovative mobile health diagnosis company designed to connect patients in rural areas with healthcare experts, further highlighting her commitment to leveraging technology for societal benefits. Her return to the Digital Pakistan project is a significant step for the country’s ongoing digital initiatives, promising to bring her extensive global experience and visionary leadership to the forefront of Pakistan’s digital future.
