A devastating flash flood struck the Swat River on June 27, 2025, sweeping away 18 members of a Sialkot family during a leisure trip. The tragedy, triggered by heavy upstream rains, occurred around 8:00 AM near the bypass, catching tourists unaware. Consequently, Rescue 1122 launched an urgent operation, recovering six bodies and rescuing three individuals, while the search for others continues amidst challenging conditions.
The family was enjoying breakfast by the riverbank when a sudden surge overwhelmed them. A distraught relative reported that ten family members, including nine children, were swept away while taking selfies. Initially, the river appeared calm, concealing the danger that lurked beneath the surface. However, the delayed response times drew criticism, as rescuers arrived hours after the 8:00 PM alert. For example, children were still struggling when help finally reached the scene.

Rescue 1122 deployed over 80 personnel across five locations, including Ingaroderai and Ghalegy, recovering three bodies and one additional body, respectively, per Dawn. Meanwhile, 22 people trapped in Imam Dhirai were safely extracted. High water levels hamper efforts, but teams persist, as confirmed by Director General Shah Fahad. Additionally, 55 of the 70 stranded individuals across Swat were rescued, highlighting the scale of the operation.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed his grief over the recent tragedy and has ordered immediate searches. He directed the National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) to issue safety measures for areas near rivers. Deputy Commissioner of Swat, Shahzad Mehboob, reiterated the enforcement of Section 144, which bans access to rivers and other water sources. However, the disregard shown by some tourists contributed to the unfortunate incident.
