Pakistani farmers’ cotton supply to ginning factories has markedly increased, fueling optimism that this year’s production may exceed 10 million bales. This positive development follows several years of disappointing harvests. By August 1, 2023, approximately 1.428 million bales had arrived at factories nationwide, marking a significant 66.5% annual rise in farm supplies, as per the Pakistan Cotton Ginners Association. Cotton arrivals at ginning facilities in Punjab rose nearly 95% compared to last year, producing 388,568 bales. Sindh also reported a 57.8% increase in cotton arrivals at the beginning of August, producing 1.04 million bales.
Challenges in Meeting Textile Producers’ Demand and Aiming for Greater Output
Despite being a significant cotton producer, Pakistan has struggled with decreasing crop harvests as farmers switch to other crops. The inability to augment cotton production, a key raw material for textiles and a potential foreign exchange earner, poses challenges. With an estimated requirement of 16 million bales by textile producers, many exporters resort to importing cotton. Pakistan’s average cotton production is between 10 to 12 million bales per year, falling short of the desired 20 million bales.
The floods in the previous year led to a record-low production of 4.9 million bales in the 2022-23 sowing season. However, this year’s cotton crop target is 12.77 million bales, cultivated over 6.834 million acres of land. Farmer groups underscore the balanced fertiliser use to enhance the per-acre yield of various crops, particularly cotton.
