A wedding in Surat’s Varachha area faced an unusual interruption due to an alleged food shortage, leading to the ceremony’s completion at a local police station.
The event unfolded on Sunday when a disagreement arose during Rahul Pramod Mahto and Anjali Kumari’s marriage at Lakshmi Hall.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Alok Kumar reported that the couple, both originally from Bihar, was near the end of their wedding rituals when the groom’s family halted the proceedings over concerns about the food supply for guests. “Most of the rituals were completed, and only the exchange of garlands was left. However, a dispute over the alleged food shortage caused the groom’s family to withdraw from the ceremony,” explained Kumar.
Distressed by the groom’s family’s decision, the bride approached the police, seeking assistance to continue the wedding. The DCP noted, “The bride informed us that Mr. Mahto was willing to continue the marriage, but his family was opposed.”
In response, the police summoned both families to the station to mediate the conflict. “After discussions, the groom’s family agreed to proceed with the wedding. Given the bride’s concerns about further disputes at the hall, we permitted the couple to complete the ritual of exchanging garlands and formally marry at the police station,” Kumar added.
The police intervened to safeguard the bride’s future and facilitate the completion of the wedding in an unconventional yet harmonious setting. “We maintained a positive approach throughout the process and assisted in ensuring the marriage took place,” concluded Kumar.
