In a ruling on Friday, the Supreme Court upheld intra-court appeals against a prior decision from September 15, 2023, which had annulled amendments to the National Accountability Ordinance (NAO).
Led by Chief Justice of Pakistan Qazi Faiz Isa, the larger bench, including Justice Aminuddin, Justice Jamal Khan Mandukhel, Justice Athar Minallah, and Justice Hasan Azhar Rizvi, delivered a unanimous 5-0 verdict.
The court accepted the appeals lodged by federal and provincial governments, stating that Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), failed to demonstrate the unconstitutionality of the NAB amendments.
Due to the Supreme Court’s decision, the Toshakhana case involving Imran Khan now falls outside NAB’s scope, the ruling notably affects the 190 million pound case against Khan.
With the reinstatement of the NAB amendments, the 190 million pound case against Imran Khan has been dismissed under these provisions. Paradoxically, this outcome benefits Khan significantly in the current political landscape.
