The Supreme Court is reviewing intra-court appeals concerning the annulment of National Accountability Bureau (NAB) law amendments. The case is being considered by a five-member bench led by Chief Justice Qazi Faez Isa and includes Justices Aminuddin, Jamal Khan Mandokhail, Athar Minallah, and Hasan Azhar Rizvi.
Imran Khan, founder of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), participated in the proceedings via video link from Adiala jail.
Previously, the Supreme Court requested Khawaja Haris to consult with Khan in jail regarding the case, which Khan had originally contested.
The three-member Supreme Court bench invalidated the NAB law amendments, leading the federal government to file intra-court appeals against this ruling.
In September 2023, a three-judge bench, led by then-Chief Justice Umar Ata Bandial and including Justices Mansoor Ali Shah and Justice Ijazul Ahsan, upheld Khan’s petition against the amendments made during the previous government’s tenure. In a 2-1 majority decision, the court reinstated corruption cases against various public officials dismissed following the amendments and voided the legislative changes.
This verdict has significant implications, as it could reactivate corruption charges against several prominent figures, including Nawaz Sharif, Asif Ali Zardari and Yousuf Raza Gilani, Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Raja Pervez Ashraf.
Following the court’s decision, the federal government appealed the order.
