The Supreme Court authorized the participation of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) candidates, such as the incarcerated party president Parvez Elahi, Umer Aslam, and Major (retd) Tahir Sadiq, in the forthcoming elections.
Elahi will contest from Gujarat’s PP-32 constituency. Challenging the Lahore High Court’s decision, Elahi sought Supreme Court permission for election involvement. His petition referenced the Constitution’s Article 185(3).
Elahi’s nominations for NA-64 (Gujrat-III) and PP-34 (Gujrat-VIII) were initially declined. The Supreme Court’s three-judge bench, including Justices Shah, Mandokhail, and Minallah, reviewed his case. Advocate Siddiqui, representing Elahi, argued against the objections by rivals and the Election Commission of Pakistan. Siddiqui urged no election delay and requested Elahi’s candidacy approval.
Justice Minallah emphasized voters’ rights, criticizing the returning officer’s obstructive approach. Justice Shah and Minallah remarked on political bias and the importance of inclusive elections. Consequently, the court overruled the returning officer’s decision for PP-32, permitting Elahi’s candidacy. He withdrew other constituency appeals.
Elahi faced objections to asset concealment and technical document errors. He had been arrested since June 1 for alleged embezzlement and corruption and had been repeatedly arrested in various cases. Additionally, the court allowed PTI candidates Sadiq and Awan to contest from NA-49 (Attock) and NA-87 (Khushab).
