The Sujawal Police announced on Friday the arrest of two suspects involved in the recent robbery of a foreign cycling couple from Poland, Kowalczyk Jakub Tomasz and Scantamburlo Marie Elisabeth, in Sindh.
Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Sujawal, Abdul Khaliq Pirzada, detailed in a press conference that the suspects, identified as Nadim Wiharo and Maqbool, had intercepted the tourists on the Badin bypass a few days prior. The robbers snatched mobile phones and other belongings from the couple, who had travelled to Pakistan after cycling through ten different countries.
The distressing incident occurred in Thatta district’s Makli graveyard, a historical site containing nearly half a million tombs, including those of royals and Sufi saints. According to an official from the Sindh Archaeology Department, the couple visited these significant sites when robbed. They were staying under the patronage of the provincial archaeology department at the time of the incident.
Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah voiced his disappointment, asserting that the treatment of international guests harms the nation’s image and will not be accepted.
In reaction to the incident, the DIG of Hyderabad suspended Abdul Haq Bidar, the DIB in charge. Additionally, Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hassan Lanjar called for a rapid police response and a comprehensive investigation to address such incidents promptly.
