The latest report by the Citizens Police Liaison Committee (CPLC), Karachi has witnessed an alarming spike in street crimes during the initial seven months of 2023.
CPLC reported a staggering 52,000 incidents documented between January 1 and July 31. The surge is troubling and deadly, as over 80 citizens tragically lost their lives resisting robbery attempts.
Breakdown of Losses and Thefts
Drilling down into the data, the CPLC report highlighted that more than 16,000 residents were deprived of mobile phones. Many vehicles were also targeted: 33,798 motorcycles and 2,296 cars were stolen or forcibly snatched away from their owners. These numbers underscore the heightened risks citizens face in their daily lives.
In a particularly harrowing instance that spotlights the escalating street crime, a security guard at a petrol pump in the Sher Shah Gulbai area of Karachi lost his life. Qamar-ud-Din, the security guard, met his tragic end when an armed assailant tried to seize his weapon forcibly.
