Steve Smith announced his retirement from one-day international (ODI) cricket, capping a stellar run with Australia’s semi-final loss to India by four wickets at the Champions Trophy in Dubai.
Steve Smith, who led the team and topped the scores with 73 on Tuesday, will stick around for Test matches and T20Is.
“It’s been an amazing ride—I loved every second,” Smith said in a Cricket Australia statement. “Winning two World Cups stands out, alongside the incredible teammates I’ve had.” With 5,800 runs at a 43.28 average and 12 centuries across 170 ODIs since 2010, Smith exits as a two-time World Cup champ (2015, 2023). He’s stepping aside to pave the way for the 2027 World Cup prep

Smith captained the ODI side from 2015 to 2018 until the Newlands ball-tampering scandal sidelined him with a year-long ban. Bouncing back, he returned as a rock in all formats, leading Tests in Sri Lanka and ODIs at the Champions Trophy 2025. “Tests are my focus now—I’ve got plenty left to give there,” he added, eyeing the World Test Championship final and upcoming series.
