Hwang Dong-hyuk, the creator of ‘Squid Game,’ has revealed insights into creating a mother-and-son duo in the series.
In ‘Squid Game,’ this pair participates in a high-stakes competition for a substantial prize. Their introduction, however, followed the appearance of real-life mother and son contestants on the Netflix spinoff, ‘Squid Game: The Challenge.’
Despite the timing, Hwang clarified that the script for the mother and son characters was developed before the reality show’s debut, dismissing any notion of inspiration from the spinoff. “I wrote the script earlier than when ‘The Challenge’ came out, so chronologically, it wouldn’t make sense to be inspired by that,” Hwang told Entertainment Weekly.
‘SQUID GAME’ Season 2 is now streaming on Netflix.

He further explained that including closely connected players was a deliberate choice, reminiscent of a married couple from season 1, where the dynamics of their relationship culminated in dramatic outcomes. “In season 1, we saw how a couple’s participation unfolded with tragic results. This led me to explore what would happen if other close relationships were tested under such extreme conditions,” said Hwang.

Hwang intends to deepen this exploration of interpersonal dynamics for the upcoming season. “This time, I wanted to introduce an even closer pair and observe how they navigate the challenges together. It adds an intriguing layer to the game’s psychological depth,” he added.
Fans eagerly anticipate how these dynamics will unfold in the the third season of Squid Game, which will be released in 2025.
