On May 31, 2025, Oscar Piastri outpaced teammate Lando Norris to secure pole position at the Spanish Grand Prix, delivering McLaren’s first front row lockout since 1998.
Piastri’s lap of 1:11.546, two-tenths faster than Norris, marked his fourth pole position of the 2025 F1 season, positioning McLaren as favourites for Sunday’s race, as reported by ESPN.
The 24-year-old Australian driver, who holds a three-point lead over Norris in the drivers’ championship, has successfully overcome his struggles during last year’s qualifying, where he finished in 10th place. “The car has been fantastic,” Piastri said, praising McLaren’s improvements. His impressive pole performance, following strong results in all three practice sessions, positions him favorably for a potential victory. Historically, 31 out of the 34 Spanish Grand Prix have been won from the front row, according to Motorsport.

Norris acknowledged minor mistakes despite a strong push but praised Piastri’s pace, noting, “It’s a good result for the team.” Max Verstappen took third for Red Bull, followed by Mercedes’ George Russell, Ferrari’s Lewis Hamilton, and Kimi Antonelli. Charles Leclerc finished seventh, with Pierre Gasly, Isack Hadjar, and Fernando Alonso rounding out the top ten. The McLaren front row lockout came in punishing 50°C track conditions, challenging tire management, as noted by Autosport.
