An official statement announced that the Spanish resident card for overseas Pakistanis starts with a one-year validity.
Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Federal Minister for Overseas Pakistanis Salik Hussain chaired a high-level government meeting to review the scheme. Pakistan’s Ambassador to Spain, Dr Zahoor Ahmed, briefed participants on the policy details and clarified that the scheme excludes individuals seeking political asylum.
Under the approved framework, eligible applicants receive a one-year resident card. After 7 to 8 years, they may pursue permanent residency and eventual citizenship, subject to Spanish regulations. Officials stressed that applicants must submit a character certificate and other required documents. The National Police Bureau issues a single national character certificate; authorities will not accept multiples.
Authorities also pledged to simplify and accelerate the verification process. The aim is to ensure that applicants do not face unnecessary delays or administrative difficulties.
Mohsin Naqvi stated that applicants would receive full support at every stage. Meanwhile, Salik Hussain described the initiative as “welcoming,” noting that thousands of Pakistanis are expected to benefit by gaining legal status.
The meeting included participation via Zoom from Pakistan’s Ambassador to Spain, the Consul General in Barcelona, and the Community Welfare Attaché. Senior officials, including the Chairman of NADRA, the Director General of the FIA, and the Director General of Passports, were also present.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs assured its full cooperation in facilitating the process for the Spanish resident card.
Officials reiterated their commitment to providing legal protection and improved facilities to Pakistanis living abroad.
