On the opening day of the first test at Centurion, South Africa won the toss and elected to bowl first against Pakistan, targeting early gains with a robust pace attack.
In eyeing a spot in next year’s World Test Championship final, South Africa knows that securing at least one win in this two-test series against Pakistan is crucial. “It was a challenging choice, but we want to capitalize on the new ball,” remarked South Africa captain Temba Bavuma. The Centurion pitch is known for its favourable seam conditions.
The hosts announced their lineup on Tuesday, featuring debutant 30-year-old fast bowler Corbin Bosch. He joins Marco Jansen, Kagiso Rabada, and Dane Paterson, who are stepping in due to several injuries among the national fast bowlers.
Pakistan’s team selection also reflects a strategic choice, opting for no specialist spinner. Their attack includes Mohammad Abbas, Aamer Jamal, Naseem Shah, and Khurram Shahzad. After three years, Abbas returns to test cricket, Naseem rejoins the team after a recent omission, and Shahzad recovers from injuries sustained during the last series against England.
“The last few encounters here have seen us succeed with a seam-focused strategy since the pitch doesn’t support spin bowling,” Bavuma explained.
Pakistan captain Shan Masood concurred, noting the pitch’s bias towards seamers and the scoring opportunities it presents. “It’s about choosing the right deliveries and securing a solid first-innings total,” he said.
Babar Azam returns to the lineup, partnering with opener Saim Ayub, who recently hit two centuries in Pakistan’s 3-0 ODI series win over South Africa.
