In a thrilling encounter at Kingsmead Stadium on Tuesday, South Africa emerged victorious over Pakistan by 11 runs in the first match of their three-game T20I series. Pakistan, chasing a target of 184, fell short, managing 172 runs for 8 in their allotted 20 overs.
Despite a resilient 74 off 62 balls from skipper Muhammad Rizwan, Pakistan couldn’t surpass South Africa’s set target. Saim Ayub contributed a brisk 31 from just 15 deliveries, but it wasn’t enough to carry the team to victory.
George Linde was the standout performer with the ball for the Proteas, claiming 4 wickets in his four-over spell. Young paceman Kwena Maphaka supported well, taking two wickets, while Ottneil Bartmann and Andile Simelane each secured one.
Early Inning Challenges and Dominant Batting
After opting to bat first, South Africa faced early setbacks, losing Rassie van der Dussen and Matthew Breetzke with just 10 runs on the scoreboard. However, David Miller’s explosive batting turned the game in South Africa’s favour. He scored a spectacular 82 off 40 balls, including eight sixes and four fours, driving the innings forward with significant partnerships.
George Linde also shined with the bat, scoring a vital 48 off 24 balls towards the end of the innings, helping South Africa to a competitive total despite a middle-order collapse. His innings featured three sixes in the final over off Sufiyan Muqeem, tipping the scales in South Africa’s favour.
Pakistan’s bowling attack saw Shaheen Afridi take three wickets for 22 runs in his spell, making him the most effective bowler for the visitors. Abrar Ahmed and Abbas Afridi also contributed, but Pakistan’s bowlers struggled to contain Linde and the lower order’s late assault.
As both teams prepare for the next match in the series, the spotlight remains on how Pakistan will adjust its strategy to counter South Africa’s aggressive batting and sharp bowling.
