Tottenham Hotspur captain Son Heung-min announced his departure from the club this summer after a 10-year tenure, during a press conference in Seoul while on a pre-season tour.
The 33-year-old South Korean star, who joined from Bayer Leverkusen in 2015, has played over 450 matches and scored 173 goals for Spurs. Despite lifting the Europa League trophy in May 2025, Son cited a challenging season marked by leg injuries and a desire for a new environment as reasons for his exit.
Son described the decision as the “most difficult” of his career, stating, “I came to north London as a kid, 23 years old… I leave this club as a grown man, a very proud man.” Winning Tottenham’s first European title in 41 years was a pivotal factor, with Son noting, “Winning a title in Europe felt like I had achieved everything I possibly could.” He has been linked with a move to Major League Soccer (MLS) in the United States but did not disclose his next destination.

New Tottenham manager Thomas Frank, who replaced Ange Postecoglou in June, praised Son as a “true Spurs legend” and one of the Premier League’s greatest players. “I would have loved to have worked with this fantastic person and player,” Frank said.
Tottenham faces Newcastle United in Seoul on August 3, where Son is expected to receive a warm reception from home fans. The club’s transfer activity remains quiet, with Mohammed Kudus from West Ham as their only major signing, while a £60 million deal for Morgan Gibbs-White collapsed.
