Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) founder Imran Khan directed Ali Amin Gandapur to resign as Chief Minister of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP). He nominated MPA Sohail Afridi as his successor. Gandapur complied by submitting his resignation to KP Governor Faisal Karim Kundi.
Sohail Afridi, a dedicated PTI member and Member of the Provincial Assembly (MPA) from PK-59 Kohat-II, brings a strong track record to the role. Elected in 2018 and re-elected in 2024, Afridi has served as Parliamentary Secretary for Irrigation and Communication & Works. His focus on infrastructure and development in KP’s tribal areas positions him well. He aims to address ongoing challenges, such as security and economic growth.
Afridi’s nomination reflects PTI’s emphasis on fresh leadership to tackle provincial issues, including corruption allegations and militancy.

Gandapur, sworn in as CM in March 2024, highlighted the achievements of his tenure in his X post. These include financial stabilisation and counter-terrorism efforts. “This role was a trust from Imran Khan,” he stated, expressing gratitude to his team. Former Advocate General Aamir Javed outlined the process: The governor has 14 days to accept the resignation. After this period, the KP Assembly elects a new CM with 73 votes.
PTI Secretary General Salman Akram Raja confirmed the change, praising Afridi’s capabilities. “He’ll guide KP effectively and advise the federal government,” Raja said. PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar Khan dismissed rumours of a rift, affirming unity behind Khan’s decisions.
Afridi’s appointment signals PTI’s strategic reset in KP, a key power base. Amid governance scrutiny, including Rs40 billion scams, the shift aims to restore momentum. The assembly’s vote will solidify the transition.
