The Smiling Friends ending after Season 3 has been officially confirmed by creators Michael Cusack and Zach Hadel. The announcement was shared in a candid video posted on Adult Swim’s official X (formerly Twitter) account.
Hadel addressed fans directly, making it clear that the decision was serious and not a joke. The tone surprised viewers, especially given the show’s absurdist humour.
According to Cusack, the decision was driven by creative burnout rather than network pressure.
Smiling Friends Ending After Season 3: Why It’s Happening
The Smiling Friends ending after Season 3 stems from the creators feeling creatively exhausted after years of work. Cusack explained that both he and Hadel felt accomplished but burnt out after completing the third season.
From the beginning, the animated comedy built a loyal fan base through its surreal humour and unpredictable storytelling. However, Hadel emphasised that they wanted to give the series their full creative energy rather than extend it half-heartedly.
The creators stated they preferred to “go out on top” rather than risk overstay their welcome. They also clarified that Adult Swim fully supported their choice.
Cusack noted that the network made it clear they were not being forced to continue. As a result, the decision to end the show was entirely theirs.
Interestingly, the creators left open the possibility of a future return. While no plans are confirmed, Cusack said they could revisit the series someday if they feel inspired.
Before the show concludes, fans will still see two previously unreleased Season 3 episodes air on Adult Swim on April 12. Hadel clarified that these episodes are not finales but additional content that did not fit into the original rollout.
In closing, Cusack acknowledged that the news may disappoint fans. Nevertheless, he described the experience as “the ride of a lifetime” and thanked viewers for their support.
