Six Levies personnel embraced martyrdom during an ambush in Jiwani town of Gwadar district in Balochistan province on Thursday.
The attack occurred near Gurdan area in oil and gas rich, but desperately poor Balochistan province bordering Afghanistan and Iran.
Provincial home secretary Akbar Harifall while talking to AFP said “The convoy headed by a senior local administration official, Naeem Gichki, was passing by an abandoned checkpost of the tribal police…in two vehicles when they were attacked by a group of up to seven people, who were hiding in the post,”
He said the assailants fired rockets at the vehicles in the convoy and Gichki and five local tribal policemen were killed and three others injured in the attack.
No group immediately claimed responsibility but Balochistan is plagued by roiling insurgencies and hit by regular militant attacks.
Mardan Division Commissioner Bashir Bangalzai also confirmed the attack, saying that six Levies men were killed and two others were wounded.
A Tehsildar and Risaldar major were among the wounded.
The assailants managed to escape from the scene after the attack.
Taking notice of the incident, Balochistan Chief Minister Nawab Sanaullah Zehri asked the Commissioner to submit report.
He also expressed profound grief over the martyrdom of Levies personnel in Jiwan. (PhotoNews / Agencies)
