Severe irregularities have emerged in the Sindh solar project, prompting a detailed review by the Senate Standing Committee on Economic Affairs. Senator Saifullah Abro chaired the meeting, where officials from the Economic Affairs Division (EAD) briefed lawmakers on the alleged misconduct. During the session, Senator Abro raised serious concerns about significant inconsistencies in the list of project beneficiaries.
According to Senator Abro, the beneficiary list failed to match verified ground data. In Larkana, authorities planned to register 21,000 families. However, the list showed only 4,000 entries. He highlighted an incident in which one household received 10 solar units, while a neighbouring home received none, exposing uneven distribution and poor oversight.
Senator Abro also pointed to serious discrepancies in procurement. He claimed that solar kits priced at Rs 18,000 were allegedly purchased for Rs 60,000. Moreover, an FBR report indicated that the solar equipment had not even been imported, raising deeper questions about transparency and financial accountability. He stressed that such gaps require an immediate, thorough investigation.

The committee expressed frustration over the absence of several senior officers who were expected to attend the session. Senator Abro accused them of avoiding the proceedings and directed that all relevant officials must appear at the next meeting without exception.
Earlier, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah distributed solar home systems to residents in Karachi during a public ceremony. He described the initiative as a major step forward in the province’s collaboration with the World Bank. The chief minister said the project aims to provide solar home systems to 200,000 low-income households.
