Sindh Inspector General (IG) Ghulam Nabi Memon ordered vehicle confiscation for those driving without licenses. He issued these orders during a meeting at the Central Police Office, Karachi, to discuss traffic violations and driver’s license issuance.
Traffic, Licensing & Training DIG Iqbal Dara briefed the meeting on the online driver’s license training facility, including the issuance of learner’s and international permits and renewals for non-commercial licenses.
DIG Dara highlighted the drive to promote online license applications through newspapers, public venues, and social media. He noted that many motorcyclists lack licenses, leading to dangerous, sometimes fatal, accidents due to non-compliance with safety rules.
According to the report, 28,685 tickets were issued in Karachi this year for traffic violations, 12,548 of which targeted motorcyclists. The city has hosted over 35 programs at educational institutions and public venues to enhance traffic rule awareness.
The Sindh police also run an extensive traffic awareness campaign via FM radio, print, and electronic media. Each SP traffic office includes an accident assessment unit tasked with analyzing road conditions and accident causes.
Karachi Police Chief Javed Alam Odho emphasized the importance of community and stakeholder involvement in media-driven public awareness campaigns to prevent traffic incidents.
He directed that local police, including SHOs, support traffic police in implementing necessary measures and discourage general road checks.
He also mandated driving training and license acquisition for all trained police personnel, noting that obtaining a license online has been simplified.
