The Sindh High Court ordered the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to provide a new date for Karachi’s local government elections.
In addition to announcing its ruling, the high court ordered the Sindh government to ensure electoral security.
The SHC bench had reserved on November 14 on a petition filed by JI and PTI against the postponement of local body elections.
Since July, the local government elections have been continually postponed since the Sindh government has consistently refused to provide security for the polls owing to flooding.
The local body elections were set for July 24, but the elections were postponed owing to “weather and rainfall.” Later, the poll was scheduled to occur on August 28 and October 24, but the provincial administration declined to provide security.
In its most recent effort to postpone the election, the provincial cabinet ordered a 90-day postponement of local government elections in the Karachi Division under the Sindh Local Government Act of 2013.
