The Sindh government officially introduced the Automated Fare Collection System (AFCS), designed to streamline fare payments using smart cards on the Peoples Bus Service.
Sindh Minister Murad Ali Shah and Senior Sindh Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon addressed the Karachi Transport and Mass Transit’s AFCS launch event.
Minister Memon highlighted that integrating modern technology to improve public services is a key priority for the Sindh government. He explained that the smart card system is initially available for passengers on Route 1 and Route 9, emphasizing that this system would enhance transparency in fare collection.
During his speech, Memon proudly referenced the Pink Buses, noting that such women-only bus services are rare globally and represent a significant advancement in public transport within the region.
Despite recent hikes in fuel costs, Memon assured that the bus fare would remain fixed at Rs 50 per person for journeys ranging from 35 to 40 kilometres, underlining the government’s commitment to affordability in public transit.
The minister also addressed delays in the Red Line BRT project, which he attributed to the caretaker government. He assured me that progress was being made on other transit projects, including the Orange Line and Yellow Line.
In conclusion, Memon announced plans for expanding the Peoples Bus and Electric Vehicle (EV) bus services with new routes, indicating ongoing efforts to enhance the public transportation system in Sindh further.
