The Sindh government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to provide up to 100 units of free electricity to its citizens, focusing on those whose consumption does not exceed this limit.
The initiative is part of a broader strategy to enhance energy accessibility and sustainability across the province, including Karachi, its largest city.
Provincial Minister for Energy Nasir Hussain Shah announced that the scheme will involve the construction of solar parks and mini-grid stations strategically located throughout Sindh. In the initial phase, the facility will provide up to 100 units of free electricity to qualifying residents.
Minister Shah revealed that approximately 500,000 households in the province lack electricity. The government will introduce a highly subsidized program to distribute solar panels to these homes to address this. Specifically, the plan is to allocate 200,000 solar panels to economically disadvantaged and middle-class families, who will pay only 20% of the cost. The government will cover the remaining 80% as a subsidy.
Minister Shah noted that substantial financial resources had been earmarked for these initiatives in the upcoming budget, and PKR 5 billion has been set aside to fund the development of solar energy projects, underlining the Sindh government’s commitment to leveraging renewable energy sources to expand and enhance power availability throughout the region.
