To combat drug abuse in educational settings, the Sindh government has resolved to implement random drug testing in provincial colleges.
A notification from the provincial College Education Department detailed the formation of a three-member committee to oversee medical screening teams during their visits for student testing.
Additionally, the committee organises seminars, workshops, and awareness sessions in collaboration with college stakeholders. These events aim to inform students about the negative impacts of drug use on health, academic performance, and career opportunities.
Addressing the Sindh Assembly in November last year, Sindh’s Senior Minister for Information, Transport, and Excise, Taxation & Narcotics Control, Sharjeel Inam Memon, highlighted the growing challenge of narcotics consumption. According to The News, he described the increase in drug trafficking and the fashionable status of drugs in society.
He reassured the legislature that measures against drug use were active, with ongoing awareness campaigns to mitigate this issue.
