Police detained several individuals after a Sindh Culture Day rally on Sharea Faisal turned violent on Sunday. According to Karachi police, participants pelted police vehicles with stones, damaging patrol vans and a water tanker.
The clash began when police asked demonstrators to move their rally from Kala Pul towards Saddar. Participants resisted the directive and began stone-throwing, causing property damage. Police then used shelling to disperse the crowd and arrested two people for attacking police vehicles.
Sindh Home Minister Zia Lanjar took immediate notice of the violence. He contacted the Additional IG Karachi and demanded a detailed report on the incident. The minister directed police to take swift action against those involved.
He specifically ordered the arrest of all individuals responsible for damaging police vehicles and public property.
The clash caused significant traffic disruption on Sharea Faisal. Authorities closed the road at the FTC intersection, redirecting vehicles from Kala Pul towards Saddar. Traffic police later confirmed they cleared the road and restored normal flow.

The violence occurred on Sindh Culture Day, celebrated annually on the first Sunday of December. The day highlights the province’s centuries-old culture with traditional enthusiasm.
Earlier, President Asif Ali Zardari commended Sindh’s cultural values. He stated that Sindh’s culture embodies tolerance, peace, and national unity. The President emphasised the collective responsibility to pass these values to future generations.

President Zardari also noted Sindh’s historic constitutional identity, established after its separation from the Bombay Presidency in 1936. He highlighted that the Sindh Assembly was the first to pass a resolution calling for the creation of Pakistan.
This incident underscores the challenge of managing large public gatherings. While cultural celebrations are vital for social cohesion, they require coordinated planning and crowd management to ensure public safety.
The swift official response aims to reinforce the rule of law while preserving the peaceful intent of the cultural celebration. The focus remains on holding individuals accountable for violence, separate from the celebration of Sindh’s rich heritage.
