The mercury soared to 48 degrees Celsius and above in 11 cities of Sindh, with temperatures reported to be four to five degrees Celsius above normal. This marks the third day of a week-long heatwave expected to ease across the country after May 27.
According to the Met department’s data, Jacobabad, Dadu, and Mohenjo Daro remained the hottest places in Sindh and the country for the second consecutive day. Temperatures in these cities surged from 49°C on Wednesday to 50°C on Thursday.
Khairpur recorded 49.3°C, followed by Rohri at 48.5°C. Sukkur, Padidan, Larkana, Shaheed Benazirabad, Chhor, and Mithi reached 48°C. Hyderabad recorded 46.5°C, Tando Jam 45°C, Sakrand and Mirpurkhas 44.5°C, Badin 41.5°C, and Thatta 39°C.
Jacobabad also reported the highest deviation of 6.2°C from its average temperature for May (43.8°C).
Karachi recorded 38.2 degrees Celsius, which was 2.4°C above normal. With 62 per cent humidity, the feel-like temperature was around 40°C.
Chief Meteorologist Dr. S. Sarfaraz said, “Jacobabad, Dadu, and Mohenjo Daro are known to reach 50°C in May. Jacobabad even hit 52°C in April 2022.” He forecasted a continued increase in temperature for at least three more days.
“Harsh weather is likely to persist until June 3. Sindh has no possibility of respite. The heat spell may break in parts of Punjab, but only after June 4,” he added.
