Sindh Chief Minister, Murad Ali Shah, has ordered the provincial, local government to expedite the construction of the Malir Expressway project. He expressed the need for part of the expressway, extending from Korangi or Quaidabad, to be functional by December this year.
During a visit to the construction site, CM Shah was accompanied by officials, including Information and Transport Minister Sharjeel Inam Memon, Karachi mayor-elect Barrister Murtaza Wahab, and Special Assistant to the CM Syed Qasim Naveed. Together, they examined the 39.4-kilometer project stretch that extends from Korangi to Kathore.
Malir Expressway to Alleviate Traffic Congestion
The Malir Expressway is being built along the Malir River’s left bank, featuring an access-controlled high-speed highway. It is designed to have six lanes, with three-meter-wide shoulders on each side, and will feature a dual carriageway.
The project will commence at Korangi Road, before the Jam Sadiq Bridge, and will feature an interchange for the bridge at the KPT Flyover. Its course will cover Korangi and Shah Faisal Colony (Quaidabad), finally terminating at Kathore.
Project’s Progress
The expressway project has been divided into two packages: Jam Sadiq to Quaidabad, which has achieved 38% completion, and Quaidabad to Kathore, with a progress of 15%. The CM was informed that the project comprises six interchanges and six straight bridges currently under construction.
Once completed, the Malir Expressway will significantly alleviate traffic congestion in the city. Additionally, it will cut approximately 40 kilometers of distance for traffic traveling to and from Karachi, Jamshoro, and even Thatta.
CM Shah assessed the damaged weir at Razak Goth, located at RD (reduced distance)-1 of the Malir River, during his visit. He assured the provision of funds to repair the damaged weirs. He urged the irrigation secretary to submit a repair and reconstruction scheme to the planning and development department for approval.
Additionally, CM Shah expressed his concern over the issue of trash being dumped on roadsides. He ordered the district administration and police to impound vehicles found disposing of waste or debris along city roads. The CM pledged a strict action plan against such violations and emphasized that this neglect is unacceptable.
