The Oil and Gas Regulatory Authority (Ogra) announced a significant drop in liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) cost, slashing the price by Rs37.13 per kg starting June 1, 2023.
The cost of an 11.8kg domestic LPG cylinder has decreased to Rs438.22, effectively reducing Rs37.13 per kg. In its latest monthly review, the authority set the price of the domestic cylinder at Rs2,321.67, a substantial decrease from May’s price of Rs2,759.89.
The price per ton of LPG has also been reduced for June, with the new price set at Rs196,752.04 per ton, down by Rs37,136.80 from May’s price of Rs233,888 per ton. Customers will now pay Rs55.09 in petroleum levy and Rs279.81 in general sales tax for a domestic LPG cylinder purchase.
For those producing LPG, the new cost is Rs155,452.04 per ton for June, a decrease from Rs192,588.84 per ton in May.
Irfan Khokhar, Chairman of the LPG Association, revealed that the cost of imported and local LPG has been standardized at Rs197 per kg nationwide.
Khokhar explained that Rs438 has reduced the cost of a domestic cylinder, while Rs1,686 has cut the price of a commercial cylinder. “The new price for a domestic cylinder is Rs2,322, and a commercial cylinder will now cost Rs8,933,” he clarified, adding that if their proposed formula is adopted, the price could be decreased even further.
However, Khokhar also pointed out the issue of black-marketing in the fuel industry, alleging that consumers were overcharged, leading to illicit gains amounting to billions of rupees in the past couple of months. He emphasized the need for stringent actions against those operating this black market.
