After over two years of dominance, Pakistani cricketer Babar Azam’s tenure as the number one One Day International (ODI) batter has ended.
Rising to the top of the International Cricket Council (ICC) Men’s Batting Rankings is India’s Shubman Gill. His ascent to the top spot was bolstered by his impressive performance in the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup.
Gill’s achievement makes him the fourth Indian player, following legends like Sachin Tendulkar, MS Dhoni, and Virat Kohli, to achieve this prestigious ranking.
Major Movements in ICC Rankings Across Categories
In the current standings, Shubman Gill leads with 830 points, closely followed by Babar Azam with 824 points. Besides Gill, fellow Indian cricketer Virat Kohli has also climbed the rankings, now holding the fourth position. Pakistan’s Fakhar Zaman has advanced to the 11th position thanks to his outstanding performance against New Zealand.
In the bowling rankings, there has been a significant shift. Shaheen Shah Afridi of Pakistan, previously the top-ranked bowler, has been replaced by India’s Mohammed Siraj. Afridi now shares the fifth position with Australia’s Josh Hazlewood, trailing behind top bowlers like India’s Kuldeep Yadav, Australia’s Adam Zampa, and South Africa’s Keshav Maharaj.
Regarding the all-rounders, Bangladesh captain Shakib Al Hasan retains his number-one spot despite being sidelined from the World Cup due to an injury. Meanwhile, Australia’s Glenn Maxwell has risen to the sixth position following his outstanding performance against Afghanistan in Mumbai.
