Shohei Ohtani has set himself apart by becoming the only Major League player to achieve home runs and 43 stolen bases, leaving the Los Angeles Dodgers manager at a loss for words.
The Dodgers made significant efforts to bring the 30-year-old from the Angels, and his performance has justified the move. Although unable to pitch, Ohtani broke another record in a narrow 10-9 victory against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field.
Entering the game tied with New York Yankees legend Aaron Rodriguez, Ohtani didn’t wait long to make his mark, hitting a home run in the eighth inning after stealing a base in the second.
Manager Roberts was amazed at Ohtani’s historic performance post-game, stating, “I don’t know what else to say. I don’t have any more superlatives for Shohei Ohtani. He’s incredible.”
Ohtani joined the 40-40 club on August 23, becoming the fastest ever. Seven days later, on August 29, he matched and surpassed Rodriguez’s record.
He is now nearing the legendary Ricky Henderson’s record for the most stolen bases and homers in the same game, which stands at 13. Ohtani currently has 11 this season.
Shohei Ohtani is scheduled to play again on Saturday, August 31, in another matchup against the Arizona Diamondbacks at Chase Field in the Dodgers’ 136th game of the season. The Dodgers aim to extend their lead at the top of the National League West with a record of 81-54.
The Diamondbacks, chasing their 77th win and only four games behind, look to strengthen their playoff position. The game is crucial for the MLB postseason in October, with the first pitch set for 17:10 PT/20:10 ET. Fans eagerly anticipate watching Ohtani’s pursuit of more records in this landmark season.
