Shehbaz Sharif has been elected as Pakistan’s 24th prime minister, having garnered 201 votes against the 92 secured by Sunni Ittehad Council’s (SIC) Omar Ayub Khan.
Sharif’s candidacy received support from the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP), Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan, and Istehkam-e-Pakistan Party (IPP).
The inauguration is scheduled for March 4 at 3 pm at the President’s House, where President Dr. Arif Alvi will officiate the oath-taking ceremony for the incoming prime minister.
Representatives Ishaq Dar, Hanif Abbasi, and Khursheed Shah facilitated Sharif’s nomination, with seven members of the National Assembly proposing and another seven seconding.
Omar Ayub Khan’s nomination saw endorsement from MNAs Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, Asad Qaiser, Riaz Khan Fatyana, Umair Khan Niazi, with additional support from seconders Mohammad Sanaullah Khan Mastikhel, Ali Khan Jadoon, Mujahid Ali, and Malik Mohammad Amir Dogar..
During Friday’s session, the PPP and PML-N successfully elected their speaker and deputy speaker, overcoming opposition from SIC and PTI nominees.
This prime ministerial election precedes the March 9 election for a new head of state, concluding President Arif Alvi’s term, supported by PTI.
