Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) President Shehbaz Sharif intends to run in the upcoming general elections from Karachi’s NA-242 constituency.
The announcement comes after his previous candidacy in the NA-249 constituency of Karachi during the last general elections, where he narrowly lost to then-Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) leader Faisal Vawda.
The Muttahida Qaumi Movement-Pakistan (MQM-P) recently clarified that no seat adjustment agreement had been reached with PML-N for the NA-242 constituency in the Keamari district. The party’s spokesperson dismissed all reports of such an arrangement as “baseless,” confirming MQM-P Senior Deputy Convenor Mustafa Kamal as their candidate for the seat.
Shehbaz Sharif’s Political Collaborations
During a press conference in Karachi, following a meeting with MQM-P leadership, Shehbaz emphasized solving Karachi’s public transport issues under the potential leadership of PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif. He advocated for Nawaz Sharif’s success in the elections, scheduled for February 8, to address these challenges permanently.
Shehbaz, while vowing to transform Karachi and address its fundamental problems, particularly water scarcity, highlighted the city’s significance as the gateway to Pakistan. He criticized the slow progress of projects like the Green Line compared to the faster completion of the Metro Bus in Lahore. Acknowledging the inability of the previous coalition government to curb inflation, he pledged to prioritize Karachi’s rights, citing its substantial tax contributions yet inadequate infrastructure and services.
The former premier expressed his commitment to major infrastructural developments, including the Karachi to Hyderabad motorway, emphasizing the need to alleviate traffic congestion. He also pledged to foster stronger ties with MQM-P, appreciating their support during the coalition government’s tenure.
