On July 28, 2025, a tragic shooting at 345 Park Avenue in Midtown Manhattan, a gunman, identified as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old from Las Vegas, killed four people, including an NYPD officer, before taking his own life.
NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed that Tamura had a documented history of mental health issues. The event has left New Yorkers shaken and raised questions about Tamura’s motives.
Tamura arrived in Manhattan on July 28, 2025, after driving across the country from Nevada. Surveillance footage captured him exiting a double-parked black BMW with Nevada plates while carrying an M4-style rifle. He entered the 44-story building at 6:28 p.m. and immediately opened fire in the lobby. He fatally shot an off-duty NYPD officer, Didarul Islam, 36, and a woman who was hiding behind a pillar. Tamura then shot a security guard and another man before taking an elevator to the 33rd floor, where he killed one more person before taking his own life. One additional victim was wounded, and four others sustained minor injuries while fleeing the scene.

The NY Post reported that Police searched Tamura’s vehicle and found a loaded revolver, a rifle case with rounds, ammunition, magazines, a backpack, and prescribed medication. A concealed firearms permit from Las Vegas, valid until 2027, was also discovered.
Shane Tamura’s Background
Tamura, recently employed as a casino security guard in Las Vegas, had no significant criminal history but a documented mental health record, according to Commissioner Tisch. He drove through Colorado, Nebraska, Iowa, and New Jersey, arriving in New York just hours before the attack. Authorities are still investigating why he targeted 345 Park Avenue, a building that houses major firms, including Blackstone, and the NFL headquarters. No evidence suggests he entered the NFL’s offices.

A former high school football teammate described Tamura as a lively, athletic “class clown” with NFL aspirations that never materialised. Speculation online has linked his actions to a possible grudge against the NFL, but police have not confirmed a motive.
The shooting caused chaos in Midtown, with police swarming the scene and nearby buildings locked down. Mayor Eric Adams praised Officer Islam, a Bronx-based veteran and father of two, as a hero who died protecting others. The names of the civilian victims are withheld pending family notifications.
