A Shalimar Express derailment in Sheikhupura disrupted rail operations on Friday after a Lahore-bound coach went off the tracks near Sheikhupura. The incident halted train traffic on the Faisalabad-Lahore section, though no one suffered injuries or fatalities.
According to official sources, one passenger coach derailed while the train was travelling to Lahore. Railway authorities quickly began recovery work at the site.
The derailment stopped rail traffic on the affected route. A railway official said a relief train had left Lahore and was working to place the derailed coach back on the track so the train could resume its journey. Authorities focused first on restoring the line and clearing the section for traffic. However, the disruption added to concerns about repeated rail incidents involving the same train.
The latest derailment came just two days after the same Shalimar Express left the tracks near Shahdadpur railway station. In that earlier incident, railway officials said coaches 4, 5, 6 and 7 derailed when staff diverted the train to a loop line because a faulty Awami Express was blocking the main track.

Officials said the train was moving very slowly as it entered the loop line. That lower speed prevented a major accident and helped passengers avoid injuries. Last month, seven coaches derailed near Adam Wahan Railway Station in Lodhran district, injuring 26 passengers.
About 10 days earlier, the Lahore-bound Shalimar Express also collided with a goods train at Lakha Road Railway Station in Sindh’s Naushahro Feroze district. That crash killed one person and injured about a dozen others. After several derailments and accidents in recent months, public concern has again turned to the condition of Pakistan’s rail infrastructure.
Several structural problems have contributed to the rising number of derailments. These include defective coaches and wagons, as well as ageing track sections across Pakistan Railways’ network. As a result, the Sheikhupura derailment is likely to intensify calls for stronger maintenance and stricter safety measures across the system.
