Former Pakistan cricket team captain Shahid Afridi recently expressed his views on the leadership dynamics within the team, specifically relating to Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi.
In a detailed interview with a private TV channel, Shahid Afridi suggested that Babar Azam would have garnered more respect both domestically and internationally had he chosen to play under Shaheen Afridi’s captaincy.
Shahid Afridi articulated that Babar Azam missed an opportunity to elevate his standing by not publicly supporting Shaheen Afridi during the latter’s brief tenure as captain. He mentioned that such a gesture would have significantly enhanced Babar’s reputation and shown a commitment to team unity and leadership stability.
Furthermore, Afridi criticized the cricket board’s decision-making process, particularly the swift change in captaincy, which he believes undermined the team’s coherence. He pointed out that frequent changes in leadership, coupled with internal team divisions, tend to weaken a captain’s respect and authority among his peers.
Shahid Afridi also highlighted the negative impact of internal groupings within the team, stating that a strong and respected captain is crucial to preventing such divisions and maintaining team morale.
Shahid Afridi’s comment comes following unsatisfactory performances at the World Cup in India; leadership was shuffled between Babar Azam, Shan Masood, and Shaheen Afridi.
