The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has appointed fast bowler Shaheen Shah Afridi as the new One-Day International (ODI) captain. He succeeds Mohammad Rizwan.
The 25-year-old will lead the Pakistan team in a three-match series against South Africa. This series is set to begin on November 4 at Iqbal Stadium in Faisalabad.
The decision followed an Islamabad meeting. The meeting included white-ball head coach Mike Hesson, Director of High Performance Aqib Javed, and selection committee members.
Shaheen has played 66 ODIs, taking wickets, 92 T20Is, and 32 Tests, with 120 wickets excluding the ongoing Rawalpindi Test. He previously captained Pakistan in five T20Is against New Zealand in 2024.

Rizwan, 33, captained the team in 20 One Day Internationals (ODIs), achieving 9 wins and 11 losses. This resulted in a win rate of 45%. He was appointed captain for both ODI and T20I formats on October 27, 2024, for the tours of Australia and Zimbabwe. However, his T20I performance resulted in four losses. Consequently, Salman Ali Agha was appointed as the new T20I captain. Shaheen’s leadership now focuses on rebuilding the team after recent setbacks. The goal is to prepare for the 2027 World Cup.
